Planning a Caleufú River Fly Fishing Expedition

A journey from wooded valleys toward the steppe, with timing and river levels central to planning the trip.

An expedition on the Caleufú River combines moving water, changing scenery and nights outdoors. Northeast of Bariloche, the route passes through wooded valleys before opening toward the steppe. For anglers who enjoy following a river over several days, the journey is as much part of the experience as each fishing session.

Why the timing matters

Our Caleufú floats generally operate from November to mid-January, depending on water levels. This is the operating window for our expeditions, and the specific dates and route must be confirmed for each trip.

Higher water may favor streamers and sinking lines, while lower flows can offer opportunities for floating lines, nymphs and dry flies. Your fishing guide adapts the approach to what the river is doing. The Caleufú holds brown and rainbow trout, with different stretches requiring different presentations.

If your travel dates fall outside the planned Caleufú window, a Collón Cura fishing expedition is another option to discuss, subject to conditions and availability.

Organizing a multi-day float

Our overnight fishing programs on the Caleufú are typically planned with two or three nights. A support crew handles the camp and meals as the fishing boats continue along the river. The guide to camping on a Patagonia fishing trip explains the general arrangements.

Explore our Patagonia fishing destinations to compare landscapes before choosing a route. Our guide to lodges and hotels in Bariloche can also help plan the nights before and after the float.

Check what to bring before finalizing your luggage. We can also combine the expedition with an all-inclusive stay to coordinate accommodation and the wider itinerary around Bariloche.
