Overnight Fly Fishing Trips on the Caleufu River

Explore the Caleufu River, northeast of Bariloche, on a multi-day fly fishing trip. From November to mid-January, we run guided float trips with two or three nights in camp, fishing for brown and rainbow trout.

As you float downstream, native forests and cypress-lined valleys give way to the Patagonian steppe. The river also holds native perch, and you may spot condors and other wildlife along the way. Each evening, you settle into camp beside the river.

Fishing through the season

Caleufu River Fly Fishing Season & Techniques

The Caleufu is an early-season fishery. We run float trips from November to mid-January, while river levels allow us to navigate the route. We start with streamers and sinking lines, then shift to floating lines, dry flies and nymphs as summer arrives. The main species are brown trout, rainbow trout and native perch.

Beginning of the season - November

Streamers & Sinking Lines

Early in the season, we fish mainly with streamers and sinking lines, working pools and runs as we float through forests and mountain valleys. With two or three nights in riverside camps, we can explore at a relaxed pace and stop to fish the most promising water along the way.

Summer · through mid-January

Summer Dry Fly & Nymph Fishing

As summer progresses, we turn to floating lines, dry flies and nymphs. The scenery changes as we move downstream, with native forest giving way to open steppe. River levels determine the window for these expeditions, as lower flows later in the season prevent us from running the full float trip. We therefore plan Caleufu expeditions between November and mid-January, with several days on the water and nights in camp to enjoy the river without rushing.
